Common sense isn't all that common

In my post a few days ago, I said that the people involved in the child pornography ring don't deserve to be breathing. Ok, enough said on that.

There are a couple of other things that come to mind that are equally disturbing to me. The first being the mind blowingly huge number of people involved and that the whole thing was so well organised nationally, it seems. From politicians, to nurses, to childcare workers, to police, to principals and teachers, among others. It's hard to comprehend.

The other thing I don't get is that the Catholic Church is only now considering making it mandatory for teaching staff in their schools to undergo police checks. I work in one of the 'elite' private schools in the country. I am not a teacher. I work in IT. When I started here, it was made clear to me in my interview that all staff, regardless of job description, undergo mandatory police checks before any job offer is made. The various reasons should be quite simple to understand and, one would think, natural and common sense. My school has been requesting police checks on all staff for a long, long time.

Particularly now, our kids are in need of protection, not only from sexual predators, but (due to the careers of some parents and the way the world is now), kidnappings, hostage situations and bomb or other threats.

It's simply beyond me that the Catholic system has only now decided it might be prudent to run background checks on their staff. In fact, I'd like to know why all people involved with childrens' education, development, health and welfare don't get screened before employment.

I know it's not the answer to the problem. I know it's not fool proof. I know it's not going to help those already affected. But surely it's a start?

Oops, Eve, I accidentally deleted your comment after reading it. I guess the "trash can" denotes "trash." I certainly appreciate any and all readers. I think the addition of you makes 2 (my cat looks at the screen sometimes when I'm writing).

By the way, I think you could easily pass for 20, and any man, millionaire or otherwise, in whatever currency, would be lucky to have you.
